Instructions

Detailed View

This wall hanging is a great technique and easy to do.
Use novelty fabrics with fish, frogs and bugs.

Finished size: 27 inches x 30 inches
Materials:
  • 404 Spray and Fix
  • 505 Spray and Fix
  • Light weight netting
  • Light weight non-woven interfacing / stabilizer
  • Lots of scraps and snips of fabrics (in brights: orange, lime green, blue, pink, etc.)
  • 1/2 yard of fabric for border
  • Novelty fabrics of frogs, fish, and bugs
  • Assorted threads and yarns in bright colors and metallics
Instructions:
  1. Cut a foundation interfacing 18 " x 14 ". Spray this evenly with 404 Spray and Fix.
  2. Next take snips of fabric all different sizes and shapes and stick them to the foundation until you have totally covered your background with no sticky spots visible. Include some of your novelty pictures. To help hold all these pieces in place, cut your netting 19" x 15" and spray with a light coating of 505 Spray and Fix and place on top of your fabric snips. I used a variegated gold thread to randomly stitch these layers together with a water feeling. I started diagonally in the top left corner and worked across the square in wavy lines but trying not to cross.
  3. Cut border fabric 5" wide. Attach to all sides and cut out novelty motifs and position across the quilt, in the borders and on top of the netting. Once you know approximate location, place motifs, wrong side up, on tissue paper and spray with 505 Spray and Fix. Place on quilt top in desired location. Reposition if necessary.
  4. Layer quilt: backing, batting, and top. Spray, baste all layers with 505 Spray and Fix. Using a straight stitch, stitch around each motif as close at possible to the edge without falling off (about 1/16 of an inch inside the raw edge, stitching through all layers.) Again, sew a wavy stitch through the center block through all layers and machine quilt a wavy line in the border to connect all motifs or a design of your choice.
  5. If you would like a 3-D grassy effect, put your yarn and/or thread in small groups (4 or 5 strands) with each group a different length. I used 5 groups. Spray the grouping lightly with 505 Spray and Fix and place on the quilt top. Hand or machine couch in place. If using a machine, use a small zigzag stitch.
  6. Bind your quilt and you are finished.
