Materials:
505 Spray and Fix Temporary Fabric Adhesive
404 Spray and Fix Permanently Repositionable Adhesive
6" x 11" rectangles or precut fat eighths
(50 different light/medium prints and 50 different dark prints)
Batting: 70" x 80" square
Backing fabric: 70" x 80" (4 yards of fabric)
Border fabric: 2 yards (optional)
Thread for piecing
Assorted colored threads for decorative stitching (optional)
Tracing paper
Cardboard shirt box lined with tissue paper
Instructions:
1. Cut 99 - 6" background
squares from your 6" x 11" rectangles.
Put background squares to one side.
2. Trace heart pattern
onto tracing paper and cut out.
3. Place heart pattern
on tissue paper in cardboard shirt box.
Hold 404 Spray and Fix about 12" above the pattern and spray
a light even coating of glue covering the heart shape.
4. Next stack 2 or 3 layers
of your remaining fabric.
Place the heart shape (sticky-side down) on the top piece.
Cut out hearts.
Reposition heart pattern on the next stacked layers and repeat
until you have cut out 99 hearts.
5. Place 4 or 5 hearts
(wrong-side up) on the tissue paper in the cardboard shirt box.
Using 505 Spray and Fix, spray from 12" above the surface
a light even coating of glue.
This will evenly coat the wrong side of the hearts with adhesive.
6. Place hearts individually
on contrasting background squares.
Hearts can be placed at any orientation on the background square
(upside down, right side up, sideways, or in between).
This random placing adds interest to the finished quilt.
Repeat until all hearts are glued in place.
If you do not like where you have placed the heart just pick
it up and reposition it.
This glue is repositionable for about 15 minutes after spraying.
7. Stitch hearts in place
by machine using a satin stitch or blanket stitch along the raw
edge or use a decorative stitch of your choice.
If you have multiple decorative stitches on your machine, use
all of them, since this will add more interest.
Periodically change your thread color.
8. Now you are ready to
assemble your quilt top.
You need to have 9 blocks across and 11 rows down.
The only rule is to alternate the background squares from dark
to light.
If your first row starts with a dark square, your next row needs
to begin with a light background square so the dark and light
colors will alternate through the quilt.
9. Layout your FIRST row
of 9 squares alternating dark and light.
Place the second block on top of the first block, right sides
together.
Using 1/4" seam allowance, stitch the right hand side seam
from top to bottom.
Next, open up the 2 blocks so right sides face up and place the
third block on top of the second block right sides together lining
up the right edges and stitch 1/4" seam along the right
hand edge.
Continue until all nine blocks are attached.
The SECOND row begins with the opposite color background square.
If you used a light square in the first row, begin the second
row with a dark square, or vise versa.
Continue alternating until you have 11 rows.
Press seams from the backside. Press seams to the right on the
first row and to the left on the next row and continue alternating
the direction of the seams until you finish all rows.
10. Sew the rows together
by placing the second row on top of the first row with right
sides together.
Match the seams between the blocks.
Place a straight pin at the bottom edge and match each seam.
Pin together to hold the seams in line.
Stitch 1/4" seam to join the 2 rows together.
Now place rows 1 and 2 right side up.
Next add row 3.
Place row three on top of row 2 -- right sides together.
Match seams, place straight pins were seams meet and stitch 1/4"
seam at bottom edge.
Repeat till all rows are connected.
11. (OPTIONAL)
To add a border cut 6" wide strips the length
of your border fabric.
Cut so you have the longest length possible.
Measure your finished center down the middle from top to bottom.
Cut your borders to this measurement.
If the raw edge is longer than this, ease in extra fabric by
marking the edge of the quilt in quarters and mark the border
strip in quarters.
Match at these points and ease excess in.
This will help square up your top.
Repeat to attach top and bottom borders.
Using a measurement across the center of your quilt top from
right to left
12. Layer and baste quilt
with 505 SPRAY AND FIX.
Spray batting or fabric.
See how to use 505 at www.sprayandfix.com.
13. To
Quilt
Stitch in the ditch around the background squares.
If you like more quilting, stitch around each heart.
For a border quilting pattern, cut out multiple heart patterns
from copy paper or tracing paper and spray with 404 SPRAY AND
FIX.
Arrange hearts in the center of the border one rightside up next
upside down.
Start with one heart diagonally in the corners and work to the
center of each side.
Measure to make sure the hearts will line up evenly along the
length of each side.
If not, mark the center of each border and put an extra large
heart in that spot if needed to fill extra space.
